I've been laid up with the flu since Friday night. It's funny but school has been so intense that being sick has almost felt like a vacation. I can't remember the last time I slept this much or spent so much time not studying. Today is my last day off before I have to get back to business, so I'm back to the books, studying diabetes, thyroid diseases, and other hormonal diseases.
“It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.” — Mark Twain
Everyone has something to say about the flu vaccine, and I'd like to clear up some things. A few facts:
the CDC estimates that seasonal flu kills 36,000 people in the US every year and this year will likely be increased due to H1N1. The seasonal flu vaccine is formulated each year based on which strains of flu scientists predict will be most virulent that season, and this is
exactly how the H1N1 vaccine was formulated. By proxy, it is
just as safe as the normal flu shot.
It makes me so mad to see people (*cough*Jenny McCarthy*cough*) using the media's dependence on ratings to sell sensational stories about vaccine dangers without any scientific background. These unsubstantiated stories have caused
nearly half of parents to be afraid of giving their children regular vaccinations, which will inevitably lead to preventable deaths. The
risk of serious side effects from the vaccine are literally 1 in 2 million. I understand the fear stemming from inexplicably rising rates of Autism, but for God's sake, don't put yourself at risk for an even worse disease on the bet that this
may cause it. And by "may" I mean won't, because there have been
comprehensive studies aimed at addressing the Autism link and they found
NO connection. Not only are people putting themselves at risk by rejecting vaccinations, they are putting everyone around them at risk.
Moral of the story: consider the source, do your own research, and form your own opinions. All of the sources I've provided are either CDC, Journal of American Medical Association, or New York Times. Sure if you go to SallysDailyHogwash.com, she'll tell you the vaccine will give you zombieosis fatalis. So... either you agree with me or you're going to turn into a zombie. Your choice.
